Suzy Peach
The only child of Roger and Mary Peach. Quiet but not withdrawn, she seems to prefer solitude but can easily fit in with like-minded people (such as Azalea's clique that she joined in ninth grade.) Suzy's parents divorced when she was 10 years old, and she hasn't seen her father since. She has been trying to locate him (though she knows that he was a lousy parent, she still loves him and wants to know more of her heritage from his side of the family.) |

Chad Mitchell
Chad used to be a student at a local private academy, but he wanted to play on a sports team (the academy had none.) His parents transferred him to the public middle school, but as a consequence of poorly-advised course choices at the academy, Chad was forced to repeat a grade. He first saw Suzy while the two were in detention; Chad wanted to know her better, but Suzy rebuffed him. Later, he began a friendship with fellow classmate Jeana, and the friendship evolved into much more. |

Jeana Jones
Jeana and her family came to South Carolina from Indiana a few years ago, and Jeana found it hard to adjust to the new school. She joined a group of kids who skipped class and caused trouble; eventually she fell into a stormy relationship with the group's leader. Escaping the group just as they were getting caught by authorities, Jeana slept through seventh and eighth grade, almost failing the eighth grade (but managing to pass with tutoring from a reluctant Suzy.) During the following summer, Jeana and Chad became a couple. |

Mary MacCauley
Suzy's mother, the former Mary Peach. Mary dropped out of college at 23 in order to support her young family, by working long hours at a local manufacturing plant. While she did that Roger stayed at home, drunk as usual and barely looking after young Suzy. After a few years, Mary kicked Roger out and divorced him. The long hours at that manufacturing plant leaves little time for Mary to talk to Suzy about important issues. |

Lindsey Peach
Suzy's cousin, who has become a source of information regarding the Peach family, especially when Suzy was looking for her father. Sometimes she drives Suzy to and from high school. Lindsey has a boyfriend named Danny, who dropped out of college and moved to Delphia City to be near her. Currently a senior in high school, she resides with her father Stuart on the outskirts of town. |

Buzz McCain
An immigrant from eastern Europe, Buzz used to be known as Butros Mikhail before he adopted a more American-sounding name. Arriving in South Carolina, he bought the largest building in town and opened an ice cream parlor and grill called Sundae Connection. He also renovated the upstairs apartments, and rents out a few of them (his tenants include Mary and Suzy.) |

Azalea Bohannon
A member and possibly the leader of the clique that Suzy joins in ninth grade. Azalea used to be privately tutored, but scheduling conflicts have made it necessary for her to attend the public high school. She is a busy straight-A student attending higher level honors courses, and is interested in helping Suzy succeed academically. |

Chauncey Claussen
Another member of the clique, Chauncey showed an interest in Suzy when she joined the group. Unlike most of the group, Chauncey happens to be a procrastinator, finishing school projects with very little time to spare. However, Suzy seems to enjoy his company whenever the two are away from the clique. |

Yvonna, Marlene and Gerald
They are also members of Azalea's clique. Gerald and Marlene are 10th graders, while Yvonna is a ninth grader (like Azalea, Chauncey and Suzy.) |
